Back to Baby Skin with Carson of C & The Moon

Carson is a birth doula and founder of the incredible body care line C & The Moon. From Carson’s home kitchen in Malibu to Instagram to jet setting with Kim Kardashian - this scrub (that’s a lot more than a scrub!) has already had quite the journey and has now finally landed here with us at Muse and Heroine. Meet Carson, the heroine behind
C & the Moon.

Dear Carson, we are very excited to introduce your niche but oh-so-
special collection of clean beauty treasures to Muse & Heroine, and we would love to get to know you more. First off, can you tell us a little bit about your background? What did you do before starting your own clean beauty brand?

In 2016, I graduated from NYU where I studied complementary medicine & the mind-body connection. I had always been passionate about health, specifically women's health and environmental health. After graduating I set out to continue pursuing my career in acting. However, when I moved back home to LA I saw the documentary The Business of Being Born and was completely blown away. It turned my life around and sparked a strong desire to be a birth worker. I became certified as a Birth Doula and have been supporting families through birth ever since! Around the same time I started selling my homemade body scrubs on instagram - a formula I had been making in my kitchen for years. It started to gain momentum soon after, and I launched C & The Moon in 2018!
Your mum is an environmental activist, how did that influence your
vision?

My mother's environmental activism is a huge inspiration to me. Because she worked so closely with the NRDC and EWG when I was a child, she learned about the importance of clean beauty and personal care products before it was really talked about. Back then there were not as many wonderful clean beauty brands to choose from, so we began to make our own products in our kitchen. That is where the formula for The Malibu Made Body Scrub came from. I am so grateful to have been raised by someone who instilled in me the importance of honoring our bodies and honoring mother earth. C & The Moon’s founding belief that the way we care for ourselves has a direct impact on how we care for our planet.

What sparked the idea to create your own beauty collection and how was C & The Moon born?

My homemade body scrub was created out of necessity to heal my dry, sensitive skin - it especially provided game-changing relief during my first NY winter. It was my go-to gift for friends and family for years. Fans of the scrub encouraged me to bring the product to market, and C & The Moon was born!

In a very short time, the hero product of your brand, the Malibu Made Body Scrub, has become a cult favorite for many, celebs included. What makes it so special?

What sets The Malibu Made Body Scrub apart is that it is not just an exfoliator. It is incredibly hydrating, locking in moisture and making your skin glow. It is also loved for its food-grade vanilla scent that smells like a sugar cookie.

Besides being the founder of C & The Moon, you are also a certified doula. How does your job influence your brand ethos and beauty creations?

Working with newborns I saw firsthand how the skin, our largest organ, takes in information from the environment around us and how the human body is itself a delicate ecosystem. I believe that we should all be as thoughtful about what goes in and on our bodies during every stage of life as we are during pregnancy.

What’s in store for the future of C & The Moon?

We’re working on some new products that we’re excited to launch hopefully in the new year!

What’s your ideal self-love ritual?

Some of my self-love rituals include lymphatic massages, sauning, ice bathing, purge writing, meditation, puppy cuddles and of course salt bathing. I really believe that in order to support others you have to be giving that same love and care to yourself. I wouldn’t be able to hold space as a doula in the same way if I didn’t tend to my own physical and mental well-being.

If you could pick one ingredient to make your ultimate clean beauty
product, what would it be and what would you do with it?

Ohh, good question! Probably Jojoba Oil. It is great for sensitive skin and such a versatile oil that can be used to cleanse pores and hydrate both skin and hair. Our new Malibu Made Glow Oil contains Jojoba as one of its key ingredients!
