Interview with Hanna Schumi: Beauty Editor, Blogger & Art Director

Hanna Schumi, 35, born and raised in Austria, is an art director, beauty blogger, and beauty podcaster behind "Gepflegte Gespräche". Here's an exclusive look inside her world.

Hello Hanna, it’s such a pleasure to have you on LIVE LIKE A HEROINE. So, first thing first, how did you get into the beauty industry?
I used to be an Art Director. I remember a time where I was bored with my job. So I started my blog foxycheeks.com 2012 to write down everything about the beauty products I love. Then I applied for a job at Niche Beauty and worked there for 2 years. I loved it! It was the perfect combination of my passion for beauty AND creative work. While I was working for them, I was also writing for Journelles, for several magazines and my own channels. So I decided to quit, get self-employed and here I am :) I renamed by work and website last year and now everything I do has one name: HANNA. It’s 100%, Hanna.
What was your best job and what was your worst job?
The best thing at my worst job (styling, visual merchandise at HM) was, that I found my best job because I suddenly knew what I want and what to do.
Right, we want to know your beauty secrets. What is your daily beauty regimen?
It’s very simple at the moment: Face wash + Serum + Sunscreen in the morning. Sometimes I include Vitamin C and eye cream. Evening: Double Cleanse + Peeling + Serum in the evening. Sometimes I do a stronger peel and follow with Marula Oil.
And what about a weekly/monthly pamper sesh?
I used to do a big Sunday routine every week for years but at the moment it’s very simple and I like it. Sometimes I love to do a 15 min body pamper sash once a week with a body scrub and a hair mask, but I hate to get back in the shower to wash it off. :D
An expensive-but-worth-it product or treatment?
The most asked question is: Have you tried the Augustinus Bader Creme? Answer: I have. And I really enjoyed it. It’s the perfect minimal-skincare-product as you use it without a serum. The creme is great if you have problematic skin, acne, or any other issues, as it has a healing effect. Also: The expensive U Beauty Serum – which I LOVE. It’s so lightweight and pure, healing, and beautiful. My skin loves it so much!

What are the three beauty products you always have in your handbag?
A lipstick or lip oil, an eyebrow gel, and sometimes a little face mist, to refresh during the day.
And three beauty essentials you would take with you on a desert island?
A good cleanser, an SPF 50 for face and body, and brush to detangle my hair (tangle teezer). :)
What would be your favorite holistic destination?
A destination where I can rest and sleep like a baby, but also do a lot of sports, hikes, and walks. A place where I can get massages and treatments, but without a full wellness agenda.
What does self-care mean to you?
Not only to SEE what’s going on with you but also to act. Sometimes I see people suffering from things they do know. They know problems, they know what is missing, they know what they want and need… but nothing happens. Self-Care is what you see and change – even it means a lot of work, but feel the difference in the end.

What is the best piece of advice that your mother or grandmother passed down to you?
Always be friendly and thankful for your privilege.
And now, a quickfire round. First thing in the morning?
Splashing cold water on my face! And then: Coffee. :)
Last thing before bed?
My nighttime routine (skincare). Every night I brush my teeth first, enjoy a good cleanse afterward, give myself a short face massage, and go to bed. That’s the last thing – I fall asleep so quickly, so: No reading, no Instagram, no Netflix…
Your go-to breakfast.
Two coffee with oat milk ;) When I have time (or I’m hungry) I love an Avocado Toast with eggs or porridge with apple and cinnamon.
What do you do to relax?
Lie down. Rest. Sleep. That’s the best relaxation for me.
Most worn piece of clothing.
Jeans. Paired with a simple white T-Shirt, a jumper, a shirt… It’s my go-to.
What is your best-hidden talent?
… to laugh with the voice of Lisa Simpson (German).
What is one dream you have that you have yet to accomplish?
To write a book. I’m not sure yet if it’s a novel or a book about beauty. We’ll see!
And last but not least: What`s the best thing about being a woman?
It’s great to BE - whatever your gender is :)
