Meet Mélanie Defouilloy, Beauty Editor at Vogue Paris
If we at Muse and Heroine had to write down a list of our dream jobs, Beauty editor at Vogue France would definitely be on there. We had the pleasure to chat with amazing Mélanie Defouilloy: here is her interview.
Salut Mélanie and thank you for sharing your time with us! You work as a beauty editor for the most iconic magazine in the world: how did you start working for Vogue?
It all started with a spontaneous application for an internship. I worked half time for fashion, half time for beauty. Eventually, and very quickly, I was working 100% for the beauty department… I’ve always been fascinated with beauty and wellness in general. With the beauty team it was love at first sight: so much that the beauty editor in chief asked me to come back in 2 years after finishing my studies, because she would have saved a permanent spot for me. It was 7 years ago, and it was the perfect timing.
What was your career journey before?
Vogue Paris is actually my first permanent job!
What is your skin type?
I’ve got combination, sensitive skin.
You receive tons of beauty products to try. But how many do you keep in your personal bathroom? And how do you choose the lucky ones that end up being in bathroom shelf?
Each week, I try an average of 3 to 5 products. The ones I like have to be super clean. Skin health is not something we can joke about. Then, they have to be easy to use. My motto has always been “Keep it Simple”. And finally, they have to be really efficient. I’m always looking for the next product that looks like “magic in a jar”.
What is your daily beauty regimen? What is your weekly beauty regimen?
In the morning: The Cream Cleansing Gel Augustinus Bader. Creme VIP O2 from Biologique Recherche. For the eye, I’m trying right now the Golden Glow from Cecilia Holistic Beauty: I love the sensation under the fingers when you apply it, and it leaves a gentle light on the skin that freshens up the face.
The evening: Pure + EO Free Oil Cleanser from Kristina Holey + Marie Veronique. Fleur Vibrante Serum Cerate In Fiore.
Extra steps: Lotion P50W from Biologique Recherche, twice or 3 times a week. Eye patches once a week.
What do you use for your body?
Lip Balm from Ipsum, the smell is incredible.
Huile Régénérante Corps Nuit Nüssa.
Tahitian Balm from Marine + Vine: It’s the best remedy when you need a vacation!
Tell us one of your personal best kept beauty secrets?
There is nothing better than a good sweat from a spinning class for your skin! It is also perfect for your mental balance.
Are there any beauty secrets that your mother or grandmother passed down to you?
Love yourself and keep a smile on your face!
What are the three beauty products you always have in your handbag?
A lip balm: often Ipsum but… I’ve got a huge collection of them. A little bottle of The Dew Mist from Seed to Skin. And a coral lipstick from Chanel.
What is your favorite workout?
Spinning! I attend 2 classes every week. And I also love Pilates and Running, but I’m not very consistent with these 2…
Favorite App on your Phone?
Therabody to program my Theragun at the end of the day.
Your favorite health-spots in Paris?
L’officine Universelle Buly for a full body massage and Le Centre Element for a Pilates Class.
Your favorite healthy restaurant in Paris?
I’ve got 4! Atelier P1 is a beautiful bakery, Le Champ des Rêves has the finest vegetables and when I’m not in the mood for cooking I’ll go to La Main Noire or Gramme.
What does self-love mean to you?
To take time to reconnect with yourself.
Can you share with us your favorite and most healing self love ritual?
After a long run by the sea side (in a little village called Locquirec in Brittany), I love to take a hot bath with a lot of oils. It’s then the perfect moment for scrubbing and have a face mask. And then, I sit on my terrace with a cup of tea and watch the sea.
